A summary statement: by Rev. Katie Silcox
This summer, the Church of England responded to the Church of Sweden's decision to authorize rites for same-gender blessings. This exchange raised the issue of our potential, as a whole Church, for moving forward not simply as members of the Anglican Communion, but also in the wider context of our ecumenical relationships as both of these Churches are members of an ecumenical agreement known as Porvoo. In this article, I will suggest the role the Anglican Covenant Agreement could play in our relationships with our ecumenical partners. I will do so by examining the content and implications of the first three sections of the Covenant and then by describing how Section 4 of the Covenant Agreement could have provided a means for a more fruitful and faithful response to Christ's call to unity and mission (John 17:17-23) in the case of the relationship between the Churches of England and Sweden.
