Statement on the Offer to Anglicans from Pope Benedict |

November 2009
’The Federation/Alliance is happy that Pope Benedict has made it possible for Anglicans, whose doctrinal stance and consciences allow them, to join the Church of Rome through a “Personal Ordinariate.”
However, for the vast majority of Anglicans who hold to traditional and orthodox Anglican teaching, this particular route to reunification is not an option for them. For example, to accept the Roman Catholic position that they have “the Petrine Ministry as willed for Christ and his Church” (1) runs directly against the stated Anglican position that while the Roman Catholic Church is a valid expression of Christian faith, its claim to universal supremacy and leadership was not the original intention of Christ (2). As conservative Anglicans within the Anglican Church of Canada, we continue to offer the right hand of fellowship to those in other Anglican jurisdictions with whom we share a common doctrine as well as to Roman Catholics and other Christians with whom we share the same essential faith, while we ourselves work for repentance and renewal within our own Church life and structures.
